Memphis man makes his 501st platelet donation

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man in Memphis shows the true meaning of community service by donating his 501st platelet donation.

Shaun Brennan took the plunge on Monday at Bartlett’s Vitalant Blood Donation Center.

The very humble 59-year-old has been donating since the 1990s.

“My greatest honor has always been to sit in a donor chair… to be a healthy person… and to be able to share my fortune with those less fortunate,” said Brennan. “Platelets are the internal bandage of your body… they keep you from bleeding to death. “

For Memphian Shaun Brennan, his “fortunes” are the platelets that flow through his veins.

Monday was no different as he donated blood platelets for the 501st time, a process he started in the 1990s and has never turned away from. He gives regularly every two to three weeks.

Brennan continued to donate platelets at one of Vitalant’s blood donation centers during the COVID pandemic. He wants to do his part in what has become a nationwide shortage of plasma and blood platelets.

“It’s a great way to help the community, save lives, donate life saving supplies to critically needed patients in hospitals. So it’s part of my lifestyle… donating, ”he said.

His “giving lifestyle” was celebrated Monday at Vitalant’s location in Bartlett where he received a Certificate of Appreciation from Memphis City Council … as well as a plaque and certificate from Vitalant.

Vitalant staff hope Brennan’s dedication will ignite in the community and inspire more people to step up and donate.

“It is certainly a valid mark and earmark as a goal or ambition that someone should take up the torch and resume their journey and move forward,” said Lawren Bougard, Director of Recruitment at Vitalant donors.

Just like Brennan, you can start donating this month.

Vitalant will welcome Donate. Struggle. Heal., A blood drive in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 8-9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It will be held at the Benjamin L. Hooks branch of the Memphis Public Library at 3030 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38111.
