AAUW names Deb Cubberley as recipient of 2021 Edi Silverman Community Service Award – YubaNet


October 28, 2021 – At its October program meeting, the Nevada County branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) presented Deb Cubberley with her 2021 Edi Silverman Community Service Award. Since 2003, the award of Community Service Edi Silverman annually recognizes a branch member who has made an outstanding contribution to the community.

Announcing the award selection, 2020 award recipient Susie Monary-Wilson highlighted Cubberley’s talent for identifying needs and then getting involved to help meet them, sharing her many skills and talents along the way. During her tenure at AAUW Nevada County Branch, she held a variety of positions including as a member, local scholarships, secretary, and hiking group leader. She also helped coordinate the AAUW Ladies Night Out for a Cause and the Holiday Stocking Project – both of which benefit Nevada County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

“Beyond her involvement with AAUW, Deb has also found various ways to improve the lives of her fellow Nevada County residents,” notes Monary-Wilson. These resources include tutoring adult learners of English, helping with her quarterly cleanup efforts in her Rattlesnake neighborhood, and helping with the Nevada County Fire Safe Council green waste depot. In addition, Cubberley has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in building homes and with the Bear Yuba Land Trust in building, maintaining, and cleaning up trails throughout Western Nevada County.

Membership in AAUW is open to individuals with an associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or higher degree from a qualified educational institution. The Nevada County branch offers “Friends of AAUW” membership for those interested in participating in branch interest groups and other activities, but who have not had the opportunity. to obtain a diploma.
